"VIRTUAL_REAL", 2012

The project “virtual_real” focuses on the way perception is created and stabilised with the help of words. Words are a communicative tool, misleading enough, since their meaning tends to be distorted to a certain degree among users. This research presents the different aspects of Empiricism and Rationalism as well as Kant's work as a guide for the realisation of the concepts of subjectivity and objectivity, which are connected with perception too.

The installation consists of two video projections and some notes in space. The first video, which is the only one visually accessible to the viewer, shows the documentation of a performance on camera entitled "graphi". It is about the learning of writing through left hand (I'm a right-handed person). The second projection -mainly a sound note for the audience- consists of records of telephone conversations, but only my part of the dialogue is accessible in the video. The speech, even dismembered gives the sense of a dialogue, but in essence is an eternal monologue.

In this way, a connection between speech and personal knowledge is arising, leading to perception. As speech comes into this our own individual reality is dented, marked or suffers some kind of loss. The relations between words and reality become confusing resulting in a vague boundary between the truth you wish to create and the one that pre-existed and you are forced (by your own nature) to submit to.

The purpose of the work is the quest of the audience about their perspective on knowledge and the aid that the work may provide in the rebuilding of existing individual reality.
